Luxury crossovers are an increasingly popular option for drivers who want posh amenities in a powerful, fun-to-drive package with plenty of room for the family. INFINITI offers two well-regarded vehicles in this vein: the compact QX50 and the midsize QX60. The latter receives some new standard features for the 2019 model year, while its smaller sibling has been completely redesigned after a break in 2018. Here’s how these INFINITI SUVs compare with one another.
The new QX50 is equipped with a 268-horsepower turbo-four that gets an impressive, class-leading 24 city/31 highway miles per gallon. This engine is all-new for 2019 and is known as a VC-Turbo, which stands for variable compression. It optimizes available power and efficiency by adjusting compression automatically depending on road and driving conditions. The engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which operates like an automatic.
In the QX60, you’ll enjoy a 295-hp V6, also paired with a CVT. The power boost comes with a slight drop in gas mileage to an EPA-estimated 20/27 mpg. Drivers report a quiet, comfortable ride in both SUVs. Both the QX50 and QX60 come standard with front-wheel drive and can be upgraded to all-wheel drive.
Although the QX60 was last refreshed in 2016 and the QX50 got a brand-new look this year, the exterior appearance of these vehicles is quite similar. That’s because the sweeping new curves of the smaller SUV were inspired by those of the QX60 (not to mention the rest of the INFINITI lineup). The simple, minimal design of these vehicles puts the focus on sophistication. Both SUVs feature standard leatherette upholstery with available leather and high-quality finishes.
Standard features for both vehicles include power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and a six-speaker stereo system with satellite radio. Both SUVs are also equipped with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and forward emergency braking. Many additional driver assistance options are available.
Heated front seats, HD radio, and a moonroof are standard in the QX60 and optional in the QX50. The QX60 also comes with an extra USB port. The QX50 has the new INFINITI dual-screen infotainment system while the QX60 has a standard 8-inch display.
Crash test ratings are not currently available for the 2019 QX50. However, they are expected to meet or exceed those received by the previous generation of this SUV, which received four out of five stars overall from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the highest possible rating in three tested categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The 2019 QX60 has earned a perfect five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA.
