2019 INFINITI Q70 vs 2019 Lexus ES
Serving Troy, MI
The luxury midsize sedan market has grown more competitive over the years, thus compelling automakers to tweak their offerings as performance-oriented machines. The Q70, essentially an update of the M Series that INFINITI introduced in 2011, is one of the younger ones, battling against older and more established vehicles like the ES, which has emerged as the best-selling sedan under the Lexus marquee. For 2019, the Lexus ES is completely overhauled for a seventh production cycle. While the Q70 is not changed at all, it still outclasses its Lexus counterpart for the following reasons:
Engine Choice and Output
While the 2019 Lexus ES is powered by a lone engine, you have two larger and more powerful choices on the 2019 INFINITI Q70. The engine on the ES is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 302 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The base-level engine on the Q70 is a bigger, 3.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. That’s 28 more horsepower and 3 more lb-ft of torque than the ES’s engine. The other Q70 engine is even bigger and mightier: a 5.6-liter V8 that provides 420 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque.
Typical of most vehicles in its class, the 2019 Lexus ES sticks with a two-wheel drivetrain. That means that engine power is sent to two wheels in order to move the vehicle forward. On the ES, this power goes to the wheels in the front. On the 2019 INFINITI Q70, however, the two-wheel drivetrain involves engine power being routed to the wheel in the back. Since the engine on both vehicles is installed in the front, the Q70, with power going to the back, has a weight distribution that is closer to 50/50 than its Lexus counterpart (i.e., 54/46). The result is a better balance and enhanced handling on the road.
Although the 2019 INFINITI Q70 and the 2019 Lexus ES each have a two-wheel-drive system, that’s all that the ES has. On the Q70, you have the option of going with an all-wheel drivetrain instead. In this instance, engine power is distributed to all four wheels. All-wheel drive is ideal for driving on surfaces made slippery by snow, rain, or ice since all the wheels have enough power to combat loss of traction. So, for optimizing tire grip on the road at all times, the Q70 is the obvious choice. In addition to its two-wheel drivetrain being inferior to that of its INFINITI counterpart, the ES does not even offer an all-wheel-drive choice.
